          名稱由來
          天普大學1884年羅素·康威爾建立。羅素·康威爾畢業(yè)與耶魯大學，是波士頓的一名律師、演說家及浸信會的牧師，曾在美國內戰(zhàn)期間的聯(lián)邦軍隊服務過。1882年康威爾來到費城領導當?shù)氐慕艜烫茫_始向當?shù)氐墓と穗A層居民教授知識。康威爾授課的時間是在深夜，——這些最初的學生后來被稱作“夜貓子（night owls）”，——地點就位于康威爾所在的教堂，這也是天普大學名稱的由來。因為“Temple”英文即為“教堂”的意思。
          康威爾在教堂的授課大受費城當?shù)鼐用竦臍g迎，因此浸信會考慮將此設稱一所學院，并指定了學校董事會，設定了正規(guī)的學校章程和課程系統(tǒng)，取名天普學院?？低柍蔀閷W校第一任校長，不管資金與設備是否充分，康威爾都決意將學校建成一所“為那些不能通過正常渠道得到教育的人提供接受教育的可能”。1907年，天普大學將自己定位改成一所大學，這一定位的改變，讓天普大學獲得了迅速的發(fā)展。
